The Future of Sports Medicine Is Holistic: Why I Created Sports Energy Medicine™

Great players do not always play great games.

When that happens, everyone looks at what can be seen. They examine the athlete’s mechanics, conditioning, statistics, decision-making and mindset.

But what if the real cause is something they cannot see?

Pressure. Fear. Emotional stress. Loss of trust. A dysregulated nervous system. A change in identity. The energy surrounding a difficult relationship, injury or role.

These invisible patterns can change what an athlete feels, notices and does in the most important moments of a game.

I still remember the pain of staring at the stat sheet after a bad game, knowing I was so much better than it showed. That experience stayed with me as I became a collegiate basketball coach, holistic practitioner and NBA mental performance coach.

It led me to one central conclusion:

Invisible causes produce visible performance.

It is also why I believe the future of sports medicine is holistic.

Athletes Are More Than Their Injuries

Injuries are whole person related - not just in one body part.

Sports medicine has traditionally focused on diagnosing injuries, treating pain, restoring movement and returning athletes to competition.

That work is essential. Athletes need physicians, athletic trainers, physical therapists, strength professionals and licensed mental health providers.

But an athlete is more than an injured body part.

An athlete may be medically cleared and still afraid to move freely. An injury can change the way an athlete sees their body, identity, future and place on the team.

An athlete may also be physically healthy but emotionally depleted, trapped in overthinking or disconnected from the instincts that once made the game feel natural.

The next evolution of sports medicine must be capable of seeing the whole athlete, including each layer.

Why I Created Sports Energy Medicine™

I began developing Sports Energy Medicine™ in 2008 to address the invisible dimensions of healing and athletic performance.

The methodology grew from the intersection of my experience as an athlete and NCAA head basketball coach, my education in sport psychology and holistic health, and my work as a BodyTalk instructor and advanced BodyTalk practitioner.

It was also deeply influenced by my work and advanced study under Dr. Laura Stuvé, a PhD molecular biologist, advanced BodyTalk instructor and practitioner who has spent decades connecting scientific understanding with mind-body and intuitive medicine.

That foundation taught me to examine the communication occurring throughout the whole person, not merely the symptom or performance problem that first attracted attention.

I began asking different questions.

What is the athlete’s body communicating?

What emotional or environmental stress might be influencing the athlete’s experience?

How are the five bodies related to healing?

Is the nervous system responding to the present moment or protecting the athlete from something that happened previously?

Has the athlete lost trust in their body, instincts, role or identity?

What invisible pattern might be producing the visible result?

In 2018, I published Sports Energy Medicine, introducing the foundational principles of the methodology in book form. The work has continued to evolve through my experience with professional and collegiate athletes, including nearly three seasons inside an NBA organization and my current work with NBA players.

The Five Bodies of the Athlete

Sports Energy Medicine™ examines the athlete through five interconnected dimensions that I call the Five Bodies.

The Physical Body includes physiology, breath, movement, recovery, sleep, nutrition, physical sensations and nervous-system state.

The Emotional Body includes feelings, relationships and emotional patterns that may appear as tension, hesitation, frustration or exhaustion.

The Mental Body includes attention, thoughts, beliefs, imagery, identity and interpretation.

The Supramental Body includes intuition, instinct and expanded awareness. This is the part of the athlete that knows, responds and creates without consciously analyzing every movement.

The Cosmic Body includes meaning, purpose, consciousness, interconnectedness and the athlete’s relationship with something larger than a single performance.

These bodies do not operate independently. They constantly influence one another.

A thought can change the breath. An emotion can change muscle tension. An injury can change identity. A relationship can change energy. A loss of trust can interfere with instinct.

That is why the whole athlete matters.

Holistic Does Not Mean Replacing Medical Care

Sports Energy Medicine™ is not intended to replace physicians, athletic trainers, physical therapists, psychologists or other licensed professionals. It fits seamlessly into any team's medical department.

Holistic does not mean rejecting conventional medicine.

It means recognizing that no single professional discipline can see every dimension of an athlete.

The future is collaboration.

An athlete should not have to choose between science, skilled medical care, mental performance, nervous-system regulation, holistic support and human understanding.

The athlete deserves an intelligent team capable of working together.

From Survival Consciousness to Performance Consciousness

Athletes often perform from survival consciousness without realizing it. They force, brace, protect themselves and play primarily to avoid mistakes or satisfy expectations.

Performance consciousness feels different. The athlete becomes present, regulated, adaptable and available. They trust their preparation, recover more quickly from mistakes and gain greater access to intuition and flow.

Sports Energy Medicine™ helps athletes identify the invisible patterns keeping them in survival and develop greater access to the state from which their best performance can emerge.

The Future Is the Whole Athlete

Athletes are demanding more complete support.

They want to perform at an extraordinary level without losing their joy, autonomy, health or sense of self.

They want to understand why they can access greatness during one game and feel separated from it during another.

They want professionals who recognize that healing, health and performance cannot always be divided into separate physical, mental and emotional compartments.

Sports Energy Medicine™ was created to help meet that need.

My larger vision is to continue developing this methodology through elite-sport application, education, interdisciplinary collaboration, professional standards and future research.

The future of sports medicine will not be created by discarding what already works.

It will be created by expanding what we are willing and able to see.

Because the invisible matters.

And the future of sports medicine is holistic.
