Top Three Reasons Players Get Injured Or Sick Under Pressure And What To Do About It

Top Three Reasons Players Get Injured in the Playoffs

I've had some time since I first wrote a blog about this. I have some updates. Here you go:

I've Noticed the High Performance Industry Is Drowning in Buzzwords… But Missing the “How”

The performance coaching industry is drowning in buzzwords…
and breaking everything down on social media

You hear constant talk about mindset, the
nervous system, trauma and subconscious programming.

Everyone is talking about it. Everyone is explaining it!

This is exciting, and to be clear...this actually is progress.

For years, we were stuck in a purely clinical sport psychology model. Diagnosis, labels, treatment. Athletes were often approached like cases to manage instead of systems to optimize. Talk therapy was king! But not always effective.

Now, coaches and athletes alike are waking up. They’re realizing there’s more to performance than surface-level thinking. They are ready for more depth. Mind-body is a word in the mainstream. I've been patient - sort of. I entered my healing training in 2007 and became a Certified Holistic Healthcare Practitioner. Then I began my PhD studies in Integrative Medicine. When I was sought out by the NBA they didn't want to hire a Sports Metaphysician so I was called the mental performance coach.

I brought with me my training in healing the physical, emotional and mental bodies. There’s physiology and body awareness and most importantly, there’s something deeper driving the outcomes.

That part is soooo good.

But here’s the problem:

We’ve gotten very good at naming things…and using buzzwords.
and very bad at showing athletes how to actually change them.

I see comments on all the mental performance influencer pages on posts with tens of thousands of views. The comments go like this: How do we fix this? or How do we learn this?

The responses... crickets 🦗🦗🦗

Social media posts with the buzzwords are awareness… without execution.

And that’s exactly why players are still getting injured and especially under pressure.

So What’s Really Going On?

We all feel it when a player goes down in the playoffs.

“Dang… this could have been their year.”

But injuries at that level are not always random.

They often sit at the intersection of:

  • Emotional instability
  • Stored stress patterns
  • Subconscious resistance

I'm not writing this to blame or shame anyone. It's not your fault. It's not their fault. That's just their training.

Would you agree that it is time for deeper understanding? And deeper work.

1. Emotional Fragility or Ambivalence

At the highest level, the body needs a clear signal.

But many athletes operate with internal conflict:

  • Most of them wants it
  • Part of them fears it
  • Part of them doubts it

That’s ambivalence.

And the body does not perform cleanly in conflict.

Emotional fragility is not the same as emotional weakness. It's just instability under pressure. When emotional states fluctuate, the nervous system loses consistency.

That shows up as:

  • Tightness
  • Hesitation
  • Loss of rhythm
  • Poor coordination

And when the body isn’t fully committed, it becomes more vulnerable.

Takeaway:

The body follows emotional certainty, or it breaks under emotional conflict.

I created a program called Built for Pressure  so  athletes can started on this deeper work.

2. Epigenetic Markers on the DNA (Personal or Ancestral Trauma)

This is the layer no one is addressing.

Athletes carry their own experiences.
They can carry inherited stress patterns as well.

Through epigenetic expression, trauma—whether personal or ancestral—can influence:

  • Stress response
  • Recovery ability
  • Nervous system sensitivity
  • Injury patterns

So when the pressure rises in the playoffs, the system may interpret intensity as threat, not challenge.

And when the body perceives threat:

  • Muscles tighten
  • Movement becomes protective
  • Timing is disrupted

That’s when injuries often happen. And we've seen that it is not just from contact, but from the internal response.

Takeaway:

You’re not just playing with your own body. You’re playing with your tribes history.

3. Self-Sabotaging Subconscious Programming (Thoughts & Beliefs)

Every athlete says they want to win.

But the subconscious asks a different question:

“Is it safe for me to win?”

If the answer is even slightly no, the system interferes.

This can come from:

  • Fear of success
  • Fear of future expectations
  • Fear of sustaining greatness
  • The brain's need to preserve energy

So instead of expanding in big moments, the athlete contracts.

Expansion versus Contraction is a Concept that Elite Athletes and Franchises would benefit from paying attention to:

That contraction shows up as:

  • Overthinking
  • Forcing
  • Mechanical breakdown
  • Freezing

…and sometimes, injury.

Not by intention—but by misalignment.

Takeaway:

You don’t perform to the level of your training.
You perform to the level of your subconscious programming.

What’s Missing: The “How”

This is where the industry stops.

It tells you:

  • “Regulate your nervous system.”
  • “Rewire your beliefs.”
  • “Process your trauma.”
  • "Be more confident."

…but they don't show you how to do it.

And especially not in a way that actually translates to performing your best under pressure.

And athletes don’t need more information.

You need:

  • Methods
  • Techniques
  • Permanent Tools
  • Emotional Body Healing
  • Epigenetic Healing Work to Clear the Slate
  • Emotional Body Confidence to Make Sure You're Built for Pressure

You need a system that understands the connection of:
mind → body → performance under pressure

Final Thought

Playoff durability has to go beyond the physical.

It’s emotional.

It's mental.

It’s neurological.

It’s programmed.

And when you train on all levels, you will perform better.

Availability is your superpower - so you stay available when it matters most.

Awareness is the gift.
Execution is the edge.
